Clinical supervision is meant to help us reflect on our practice so that we can continue our learning and growth. It provides an intentional setting where we learn to assess our clients needs, the treatment approach as well as our own personal journey in providing therapy. This support provides an outside lens to help with complex cases so that clinicians can build confidence.
Trauma-informed supervision adds depth to looking at clients and their families. We will pivot our ideas of resistance, denial, manipulation and personality disorders to instead see protection, reenactment and survival skills. This lens assists us in being more relevant to the needs of the client and consequently more efficient and effective in the work we do.
Clinical supervision is provided by Dawn Taylor, an approved Clinical Supervisor with BCACC. Dawn has been counselling high-risk and complex families, youth and individuals for over 21 years.
A client’s physical and emotional well-being is of the utmost priority. Clinical supervision can ensure that therapists are practicing in a manner that will maintain the safety and wellness of the individuals they are treating.
Clinical supervision can assist new therapists in gaining confidence, mastering techniques and handling challenging cases effectively with empathy. It can also help experienced therapists update their skills and knowledge to stay current with changing trends and novel issues.
Almost all professional psychotherapy or counselling programs will require students to engage in some form of clinical supervision before graduation or for final certification prior to practicing independently.
